Breed of the Week: Dachshund
The Dachshund, also called the Doxi, badger dog and wiener dog, is a short-legged breed with a long body. The breed originated in Germany around the 1600’s and became popular in the United States in the early 1900’s. The breed comes in three varieties, short-haired, wired-haired and long-haired; they can either be standard in size or miniature.
The coat of a Dachshund comes in a variety of colors including black, many shades of red, brown, cream, bluish grey, tan, black and cream, sable and others. The smooth-hair, are the most popular variety of the breed in the United States.
Dachshunds are clever, bold and loyal as well as playful, fun and lively. They are devoted to their owner and family, however they are a little standoffish to strangers and children not within the family. This breed does fine in an apartment, as long as they are taken for walks and get exercise. They are energetic dogs and boredom can lead to a little destruction.
Due to their long spine and small rib cage, Dachshunds commonly have spinal problems, that can lead to paralysis. Heart disease, deafness, urinary tract problems, cataracts, epilepsy, dental problems and obesity are a few other heath problems. Normal life expectancy ranges from 12 to 15 years.
